One of the biggest obstacles facing visually impaired people wanting to live independently concerns their ability to travel by themselves. Despite this there seems to be little research into the availability of geographic data that is useful for somebody with a visual impairment. The aim of my dissertation is to evaluate OpenStreetMap as a data source to meet the requirements of visually impaired people.

There are three ways that I am going to be using to look into this:

When complete I hope to be able to make recommendations to improve the OpenStreetMap data. I also hope to be able to build a tool to highlight places that need more data relevant to a visually impaired person.
